I had to delete the existing wuauserv service before replacing it. When I simply installed the new registry keys without deleting the existing one, the Windows Update Service still did not work.

System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files. To do this, click Start , type Command Prompt or cmd in the Search box, right-click Command Prompt , and then click Run as administrator.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow. The scan results will be shown after this process is finished. I followed your link and only saw fix for windows 7. I am running windows 10 x Tried to use Windows update diagnostic and repair tool and got the error message saying "windows update is either missing or corrupt.
Even though I'd stopped bits and wuauserv services, I still had to rename wuauserv. I didn't look for a different update installer package for Server , but used the same update installer as I did on the Windows XP SP3 system. Another Server Looping Failure:. In this example, I came across a Server that was looping on itself when the user went to the windows udpate web site. The two screens looked like this:. In this case, looking over the WindowsUpdate.
So the update is looping for a similar reason, this is because of a version mismatch between a file required for Windows Update to function properly. How it got messed up is anybody's guess - searching around, I found 3 different versions, and the one up in the dllcache directory was the correct version. This screen shows me searching around, followed by the properties on the version in the dllcache directory:. At first, it wouldn't copy - it turns out the file was still in use.
You can see my progression here, first the file won't copy, then I run process explorer to see who has the file open, I found an Internet Explorer instance without any GUI windows still running the DLL, killed that process, then retried the copy and the file now copied over:.
Next time, I'm going to try the "new" fix-it tool first. That would be way nicer than the manual ugh installation I had to go through.
So Fix-It still isn't fixing it all. If you found this helpful or not , please send me a brief email -- one line will more than do. Whereas if I never hear from anyone, then why bother? Everything below this line is to help search engines with finding this content - some of these are right out of my WindowsUpdate. Seriously, there is no reason you need to be reading all this gunk! Help error message 0x windows update server !
Windows update failed with 0x It was the first link in the screen, all shown here: The screen says it is for Windows 7, but it worked perfectly for me on a Server box.
What is happening The short version is the install for Windows Update for some reason isn't installing all the files it needs to run. Don't worry - I'll walk you through everything. What you will need: Download a copy of the Windows Update 3. The system did a full suite of updates, updated its updating engine, and is running fine. When you are done, you can delete that temporary directory you saved all the files into. For Server installations: Following the similar procedure above, I had to copy wups.
Another Server Looping Failure: In this example, I came across a Server that was looping on itself when the user went to the windows udpate web site. The two screens looked like this: Followed by: In this case, looking over the WindowsUpdate. I think last MS Updates last week is the reason For me it seems the update issue is related to their web site only.
Wednesday, November 19, AM. Confirming same problem and same resolution. Rob Commarota. Wednesday, November 19, PM. Andreas 0. Same with our machines here, none of the "usual" fixes really helped. Thursday, November 20, AM.
I can confirm this issue on one server but not another. These servers are running WHSv1. After a reboot of the problem server I was able to download and install this mornings update from the Console but the issue still exists if I were to run the updates from Windows Update.
Don't try this workaround to your domain controller. No way to use MicrosoftUpdate. This is a temporary solution at best and not a permanent solution.
It only works until a successful update is done and then it's back to a "broke" status. MS needs an update to remedy. Thursday, November 20, PM. Edited by huddie71 Thursday, November 20, PM quotes. Its boring, MS still didn't got a solution for this problem. Many thanks for your post! By the way, Susan: Our Server box gets its updates from WSUS on another server and can still contact it without any trouble , but its muauth.
Edited by jjjdavidson Thursday, November 20, PM. I set the date correctly again immediately afterwards. Waiting for MS to fix the date properly. Friday, November 21, AM.
Friday, November 21, PM. Why is it taking MS so long to react? Seems like a simple fix here. This is becoming tiresome.
Andreas 1. I agree as this indeed seems to boil down to a simple expiration problem. Temporarily setting the date back works for me too. Setting the date back for WHS does not work. Need to use the previously mentioned process, stop services, delete dir then re-enable services. Works well then. I have two WHS boxes and the date trick would not work on either.
I simply renamed the authcab. Are your servers using Windows Time service to keep accurate time? You might need to do " net stop w32time " before you change the date. Looks like we'll have to use the workaround for now until MS figures out the problem Dani Avni. Saturday, November 22, AM. By-the-way "Microsoft baseline Security Analyser" is still able to find "Microsoft Updates" Update: I tried renaming the "software distribution" folder but it hasn't fixed the problem.
Edited by pmjbeedle Sunday, November 23, PM. Saturday, November 22, PM. Dani Avni: Thank you for posting this workaround. Edited by mjth Tuesday, November 25, PM. Sunday, November 23, AM. Again, tweet WindowsUpdate and Microsoft with a link to this forum until they contribute. Monday, November 24, PM. Long Thursday, December 25, PM. Many Thanks!!!
OLD post-fix. Wednesday, November 26, PM. Worked again as expected here in Germany On my XP and also on Windows Greetings Ritchy. Greetings Ritchy I can confirm that the WS machine that was failing for me previously is working again as well. Edited by b Thursday, November 27, PM log check.
Checked three of our servers again today and can confirm it is now working again. I had not applied any permanent change - just used the temporary workaround.
That means it looks like Microsoft have fixed this. And slowly. Same old Microsoft. Thursday, November 27, AM. Thursday, November 27, PM.
